Damion D. Moffett, 27, was sentenced today to Life without the Possibility of Parole plus 20 years in the Circuit Court for Baltimore County for First Degree Murder and Use of a Firearm.
On February 23, 2021, the Baltimore County Police were called to the 2900 block of Yorkway in Dundalk because of a report of shots fired.
There, the police found Deshawnte Young, 21, lying in the street suffering from gunshot wounds to his head and chest. Mr. Young was taken to Bayview Medical Center where he was pronounced dead as a result of the gunshot wounds.
The investigation by Homicide Detectives revealed that Mr. Young was with Moffett and they stopped at the place where he was shot. The two were standing outside of Mr. Youngs’ vehicle where they apparently got into an argument. Moffett then shot Mr. Young and fled on foot from the scene. The Detectives were able to find many communications between the victim and Moffett through Mr. Young’s cellphone. Moffett was located and arrested three days later.
In September of 2023 a jury convicted Moffett of First Degree Premeditated Murder, Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Crime of Violence, and Felon in Illegal Possession of a Firearm. After multiple involvements in the juvenile justice system, the Defendant had prior convictions as an adult for Armed Robbery, Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance with the Intent to Distribute, First Degree Assault and Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance.
Judge Julie Glass elected to sentence Moffett to Life without the Possibility of Parole based upon the severity of the crime and the prior criminal record of the defendant. State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger noted “this is sadly, again, an example of the proliferation of guns in the hands of those who should not have them and the violence society suffers from that”.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant States Attorney Michael Fuller.
