Baltimore City Won’t Permit Treatment of Ohio Toxic Train Water

-Baltimore City Mayor Brandon Scott sent a letter to Clean Harbors of Baltimore denying their request to pretreat wastewater from a East Palestine, OH train derailment-

Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott announced that the City of Baltimore will not permit Clean Harbors of Baltimore, Inc. to pretreat the wastewater from the train derailment in East Palestine, OH

“I stand against any efforts that potentially compromise the health and safety of our residents, and the environment.
As such, we are denying Clean Harbor’s request to dispose of pretreated wastewater into the Baltimore City wastewater collection system,” Scott said in statement.

This issue caused major concern in eastern Baltimore County because the pretreated water from Clean Harbors would eventually go to the Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The news was met with excitement on by both ends of the aisle as Republican Delegates Kathy Szeliga and Ryan Nawrocki thanked the Mayor and Baltimore City.

“Kathy Szeliga and I thank Baltimore City for taking swift action and stopping the toxic waste from the railroad disaster in East Palestine, Ohio from being discharged into our state,” Nawrocki wrote.

“The health of the citizens of the Baltimore region, and the Chesapeake Bay, are the priority for all elected officials.
We will still be working with Senator Mary Washington and other colleagues to pass legislation for a long-term plan to avoid this issue in the future.”
