BGE to Hold Perry Hall Meeting About Power Plant Closure

BGE is hosting a community meeting about the closing of Talen Energy’s Brandon Shores Generating Station on May 23 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m in the cafeteria at Perry Hall High School (4601 Ebenezer Road Perry Hall, MD 21236).

Brandon Shores Generating Station is located in Anne Arundel County but local officials are concerned about the impact that transmission line will have in East Baltimore County.

County Councilman David Marks said has met with affected neighbors for the past several weeks, and encourages community members with more questions to attend this meeting.

“The Brandon Shores Retirement Mitigation Program will significantly impact the character of rural Kingsville and other Eastside communities,” Marks wrote on social media.

“New transmission facilities will be erected to channel power from the north, as the existing power plant at Brandon Shores is closed for service.”

Delegate Kathy Szeliga explained she has also heard from constituents who are concerned about the expanded power lines near their homes and the potential health risks of exposure to high-voltage power lines.

“When the Brandon Shores power plant closes, our region of Maryland will have to import power from the Peach Bottom nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. BGE plans to install high-voltage power lines in Harford and Baltimore Counties to import energy from Pennsylvania,” Szeliga said.

“They have announced the modification of over 35 miles of transmission lines. This may affect property values in communities like Kingsville and White Marsh. However, this issue may impact all communities in the region as electric bills will go up.”
