Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski and Baltimore County Revenue Authority officials joined elected officials, community members and golfing enthusiasts to break ground on a significant expansion and renovation of the Rocky Point Golf Course Clubhouse in Essex. Located on the 215-acre public golf course, the renovated clubhouse will feature modern and enhanced amenities with increased event spaces to continue supporting local nonprofit and community organizations.

“We are committed to delivering world-class opportunities for our residents to play, compete, and explore Baltimore County’s natural beauty – especially along our scenic and historic eastern waterfronts,” said Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski. “Working alongside the Baltimore County Revenue Authority, this exciting renovation to the Rocky Point Clubhouse will ensure our beloved public golf course continues to be a regional gem where athletes and enthusiasts of all ages can learn the sport, build new connections with their community, and enjoy all that Baltimore County has to offer.”

The renovation of the original 1971 clubhouse will transform the building into a more modern and contemporary golf and community event space with approximately 12,000 square feet. The scope of the work will include a new commercial kitchen, event space that will seat approximately 180 people, a new 24-30 seat mixed grille area, new restrooms, and pro shop and storage space for approximately 75 golf carts. The $8.25 million project is supported by Baltimore County and the Baltimore County Revenue Authority.

The new facilities will allow the current golfing community and event sponsors to utilize an indoor, conditioned space that that can offer catering services to the organizations who hold their events at Rocky Point. When not in conflict with golf events, outside community groups and individuals will be able to stage events at the new clubhouse.

“Thanks to all that took part in the decision to move forward with this project, and especially to the County Executive for his dedicated and tireless support and vision, without which this project would not have happened, said Baltimore County Revenue Authority Board Chair Steven Thomas. “Everyone will now be able to enjoy Rocky Point and its spectacular location. It is truly a great day for the east side of Baltimore County and for Rocky Point.”

The Rocky Point Golf Course occupies a portion of the 390-acre Rocky Point Park, which is operated by the County’s Department of Recreation and Parks. The Rocky Point Golf Course clubhouse is the last of the four golf course clubhouses to be improved at one of the busiest public golf courses in the region. The golf course hosts approximately 42,000 rounds of golf each year, which includes about 5,500 golf outing rounds, sponsored largely by community based non-profit organizations who use the outings to raise operating funds for their missions.

Baltimore County has historically provided capital dollars to Revenue Authority projects to make the projects financially feasible for the Revenue Authority and keep the public access affordable for the general public who use the facilities. The five public golf courses in Baltimore County are owned by the County, on land leased to the Revenue Authority under a long-term lease agreement that permits the Authority to keep surpluses for the maintenance and operation of the courses.

The work is expected to start shortly after the groundbreaking to avoid disruption to the peak playing season and is expected to take 10 months to complete. This is the first major work on the clubhouse since it was opened in 1971.
