Councilman Marks: Safety Improvements Planned on Walther Blvd

The following article was submitted by County Councilman David Marks about a traffic safety meeting at Oak Crest in Carney

On November 25, I attended a packed house at Oak Crest senior community where the Baltimore County Department of Public Works and Transportation detailed plans to improve safety along Walther Boulevard near the campus and Belmont Park.

Although many residents have supported a traffic light, the area does not meet standards required by the state and the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

The plan to be implemented by Baltimore County includes three parts.

First, flexi-posts and a designated turn lane will be added to delineate a safer entrance off Walther Boulevard southbound into Oak Crest.

Second, a designated left hand turn out of the campus will be added onto northbound Walther Boulevard.

Third, a new pedestrian crosswalk will connect the campus to the Food Lion Shopping Center across Walther Boulevard.  The crosswalk will include a push button with yellow flashing lights that will alert drivers going both north and southbound.

If the traffic pattern is successful, the flexi-posts will be replaced with a permanent, concrete landscaped configuration next year.

I appreciate Senator J.B. Jennings and Delegates Ryan Nawrocki and Kathy Szeliga for joining us and for their advocacy; the county offices that have been involved in this project; and the hundreds of Oak Crest residents who have asked for improvements at this location.   This represents the third major traffic improvement project our office has been able to get approved in 2025.   Traffic lights are now operational at Bucks Schoolhouse Road and Perry Hall Boulevard, and at Bird River Road and Campbell Boulevard.
