BGE is asking its customers to conserve energy today as one of its power plants suffered an “unplanned disconnection”.
BGE also stated this incident could result in temporary power outage.
Here is the full email sent out to BGE customers this afternoon.
This morning, a power plant experienced an unplanned disconnection from the BGE electric system. BGE is coordinating with the plant’s owner to make any needed repairs as quickly and safely as possible. Additionally, PJM Interconnection is evaluating whether there is enough power in the region.
This event has the potential to cause a temporary power outage this afternoon and evening to protect the grid.
To reduce the potential for an outage we are asking all BGE customers to conserve electricity beginning immediately and through this evening.
Unfortunately, a temporary outage may still be unavoidable. If an outage is necessary we will make every effort to alert you in advance. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Please consider the following preparation and conservation recommendations:
Preparing for outages
• Store a supply of bottled water and easy-to-prepare, non-perishable foods.
• Charge cell phones, computers, electric vehicles, and other battery-powered electronic equipment.
• Customers with landlines should keep a corded phone to report outages if cell phones lose power.
• Have a flashlight with fresh batteries on each floor of your home.
• Customers requiring refrigeration for medication or electricity for medical equipment should have alternate arrangements in place in the event of an extended power outage.
Conserving Energy
If your health permits:
• Monitor your thermostat.
• Turn on ceiling fans or standalone fans.
• Close blinds, shades, and drapes.
• Delay the use of major, heat-generating household appliances such as ovens, stoves, dishwashers, and dryers.
• Turn off non-essential appliances, electronics, and other devices.
To help conserve energy, BGE announced an emergency PeakRewardsSM Cycling Event earlier today.
