Gov. Wes Moore announced he had a meeting with US Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and there was an agreement to expedite the reconstruction plans for both the Key Bridge and the American Legion Bridge projects.
“We all agree that building great, big things shouldn’t be impossible in America,” Moore and Duffy said in a joint statement.
“That includes the Francis Scott Key Bridge and the American Legion Memorial Bridge — two major infrastructure projects that are essential to the Baltimore and Beltway economy.”
Delegate Bob Long said his office was also in contact with Duffy and is pleased with the help from the federal government.
“PROGRESS! About a month ago I wrote a letter to Transportation Secretary Duffy urging him to get involved with the process of rebuilding the Key Bridge,” Long wrote on social media.
“The message was well-received and yesterday Gov. Moore traveled to Washington, DC to meet with Secretary Duffy. The two agreed to ‘accelerate the reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge’.
Thank you Secretary Duffy!”
The contruction of the new Key Bridge was scheduled for a late 2028 completion but The Maryland Transportation Authority announced in November that cost had increased to $4.3-$5.2 billion with a later 2030 completion date.
The acceleration announcement from Moore and Duffy didn’t provide a specific completion date of the new bridge.
