Local Students Finalist in Black History Oratory Competition

Baltimore County Public Schools students are among many finalists in WJZ’s Black History Oratory Competition 2023. The finalists were selected from among the 200 Maryland students who submitted essays.

The BCPS students who are finalists from eastern Baltimore County schools are:

• Mahlet Nigussu, Grade 11, Perry Hall High School
• Favour Ogedengbe, Grade 11, Eastern Technical High School
• Zariah Smithwick, Grade 10, Kenwood High School

The annual Black History Month competition is open to students in Grades 9 – 12. This year, students
were asked to write 500-word essays in response to quotes from agricultural scientist and inventor
George Washington Carver, entrepreneur and activist Madam C.J. Walker and author and attorney
Charles W. Chestnutt.
