BCPS Inspector General oversight bill dies in MD Senate

The legislation that would give the Baltimore County Office of the Inspector General’s jurisdiction to include oversight of Baltimore County Public Schools was defeated tonight in the Baltimore County Senate Delegation.

Democratic Sen. Carl Jackson and Republican Del. Ryan Nawrocki cross-filed the bipartisan bill.

The bill, SB 15, was created to improve accountability and transparency within Baltimore County Public Schools.

Jackson, J.B. Jennings, Johnny Ray Salling and Chris West were the state senators that voted in favor of the legislation.

Senators Benjamin Brooks, Shelly Hettleman,  Charles E. Sydnor III and Mary L. Washington voted against the bill.

Democratic County Councilman Mike Ertel and Republican Councilman David Marks both supported the legislation.

Fifth District School Board Member Julie Henn said she supported the bill, along with TABCO [Teachers Association of Baltimore County].

Henn added she was not happy with the vote.

“The public deserves better.
Accountability is not optional,” she wrote.
