Nawrocki Introduces Statewide Inspector General Legislation

District 7A Delegate Ryan Nawrocki announced he is presenting a bill that would create an independent statewide Office of Inspector General.  His office released the following press release

Delegate Ryan Nawrocki has introduced legislation to establish an independent statewide Office of Inspector General, a major government accountability reform designed to increase transparency, prevent waste, and protect Maryland taxpayers.

The legislation would create a fully independent Office of Inspector General with statewide jurisdiction, modeled after successful oversight offices in neighboring Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The bill establishes an Inspector General Advisory Board that appoints the inspector general and conducts annual performance evaluations to ensure independence and effectiveness.

As Maryland faces growing fiscal pressures and increased demands on taxpayer resources, the legislation aims to modernize the state’s oversight infrastructure and strengthen public trust in government operations.

Several Maryland counties, including Baltimore County, Baltimore City, Montgomery County, and Howard County, already operate inspector general offices.

“Marylanders deserve a government that is accountable, transparent, and focused on responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars,” said Delegate Ryan Nawrocki.

“An independent statewide inspector general provides the investigative tools necessary to uncover waste, fraud, and abuse.”

“Unlike traditional audits that focus solely on financial records, inspectors general have investigative authority, including subpoena power, to uncover facts that numbers alone cannot reveal,” Nawrocki added.

“This legislation strengthens transparency, deters misconduct, and reinforces public confidence in how government operates
