“Removal of D-Day, Pearl Harbor Day, & Patriot Day from BCPS Schools”

5th District BCPS Board Member Julie Henn released a statement that there is a proposal to remove D-Day, Pearl Harbor Day, & Patriot Day from the BCPS learning curriculum. Her statement is below:

Board policy requires that schools devote time in recognition of D-Day, Pearl Harbor Day, and Patriot Day (9/11) – among other significant days.

BCPS staff now recommend the removal of these three specific days from policy.  Why?  They say that MD law doesn’t require it.  Apparently, some lawmakers don’t think our students need to learn about D-Day, Pearl Harbor Day, and Patriot Day either.  The majority of the voting members of the Board’s policy committee agree.  My motion to keep D-Day, Pearl Harbor Day, and Patriot Day in our schools failed (2-3).

Now it is up to the full Board to decide.  What do you think?  Email your thoughts to boe@bcps.org or sign up for a chance to speak at our next meeting.  Find out how here
