Benstorming- County Council Races Heating up for 2026

As we inch closer to 2026, next year’s Maryland Gubernatorial primary is almost six months away

The biggest change is on the county level as the Baltimore County Council voted to expand from seven to nine districts.

On the Eastside, District 6 makes up Towson, Parkville and Overlea. District 7 is now the home of Perry Hall, Kingsville and Carney.

District 8 is primarily a Middle River and Essex district. The new District 9 encompasses Dundalk, Edgemere and Rosedale.

As expected, there was a lot of controversy and back and forth on the new maps.

Now that the maps are finally official, some candidates are starting to announce and file for office.

District 6- Councilman Mike Ertel is expected to seek a second term but no candidates have officially filed.

District 7- Councilman David Marks has filed for a fifth term on the council. He is the only candidate to file at this time.

District 8- This might be the most competitive district as no incumbent resides in this district two Democrats Jack Carmody and Sharonda Dillard-Huffman have filed for office. Philip DePalo has filed on the Republican side.  DePalo ran for County Council in the old District 5 in 2022 but was defeated by Marks in the primary.
Josh Sines has announced his intention to run in this district.

District 9-There are rumors that current Councilman Todd Crandell will not seek reelection.
JD Urbach was the first candidate to file on the Republican side. Tim Fazenbaker has also announced he plans to run for County Council. No Democrats have filed in this time.
