Del. Long: Letter to Duffy gets federal help for Key Bridge

Sixth District Delegate Bob Long who says his letter to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy helped get the federal government involved in the Key Bridge rebuild.

When the Dali struck our Key Bridge nearly two years ago, the impact was felt immediately by families, workers, small businesses, and our broader economy.

I believe it is my responsibility to ensure that our concerns are heard not just in Annapolis, but in Washington too.

That is why about a month ago, I wrote directly to the U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, requesting federal insight, coordination, and assistance as Maryland works to rebuild this critical piece of infrastructure.

In my letter, I stressed the bridge’s importance to regional mobility, the Port of Baltimore, and national supply chains. I know how much pain the bridge collapse has inflicted upon our community.

I asked for strong federal-state collaboration to help move the rebuilding effort forward efficiently and responsibly.

This came after it was announced the bridge was going to take double the amount of time and double the amount of money that was originally estimated.

I want to see this revolved as quickly, safely, and efficiently as possible.

I am excited to share with you that this outreach was successful.

Following my letter, Secretary Duffy invited Governor Wes Moore to the White House to discuss the bridge reconstruction and the federal government’s role in supporting Maryland’s recovery.

By all accounts, the conversation was productive and constructive, with a shared understanding of the urgency and national significance of this project. The pair agreed to “accelerate the reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge”.

The meeting underscored what residents of District 6 have known from the beginning: the loss and rebuilding of this bridge is not a purely local issue—it is a matter of national infrastructure and economic importance.

Federal engagement is essential to ensuring that the project is completed safely, swiftly, and with the long-term needs of our region in mind.

We have a long way to go, but I am confident this is a major step in the right direction. I will continue to fight for our community. Thank you Secretary Duffy for taking my message!
