Delegate Bob Long: “Update on Back River WWTP Permit”

-The following article was submitted by Delegate Bob Long of the 6th District as he gave an update on the Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant –

I want to give an update on the Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant since the permit expired April 30th, 2023.

I have stayed in contact with Maryland Department of the Environment to make sure the plant continues to be maintained.

MDE assured me that the conditions of the recent permit will stay fully enforceable until a new permit is issued.

We were told that MDE is also working on a Consent Decree which will correct past violations through corrective actions.  They are also looking into ways of strengthening the new permit.  We will be notified when the permit is ready for public comment.

Our office will continue to monitor all the events at Back River WTTP to make sure it remains in compliance with environmental regulations.
