The Baltimore County Fraternity Order of Police released a statement.

“We mourn the passing of Shawn “Spike” McElfish, who retired in 2024 after 31 years of dedicated service. Spike was a legend behind the badge and a dedicated member of this Lodge.

“Our thoughts are with the McElfish family during this difficult time. Rest easy, Spike. You will be greatly missed.”

McElfish was named “Officer of the Year” in 2016 by the Precinct 12 Police Community Relations Council.

He was also known for baseball.
The former minor league player was a prominent baseball coach in the area.

He led Eastern Tech to a state title in 2005 & 2007.

“Coach Spike’s impact on our school was profound. Since joining Eastern Tech in the late 90’s, he gave countless hours coaching our baseball (and girl’s golf) teams, always pushing our students to be the very best versions of themselves,” Eastern Tech High School said in a statement.

“His big heart, genuine encouragement, and steadfast belief in young people made him not just a coach, but a trusted mentor and friend to generations of Mavericks. Many of us will remember his infectious spirit, his pride in his players, and his quiet strength in every challenge.”

McElfish also held many summer Baltimore County Police Baseball Camps for kids in the Dundalk area.
