On Tuesday, I had the privilege of joining leaders at Tradepoint Atlantic for a major announcement: defense technology leader Anduril industries is coming to our community.
Here in Sparrows Point, they will manufacture autonomous surface vessels and underwater defense technology- bringing a critical industry leader and new opportunity to our region.
For over a century, Bethlehem Steel was the backbone of Sparrows Point.
At its peak, the steel mill was the largest steelmaking facility in the world, employing tens of thousands of local families and forging the steel for iconic American landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, the Empire State Building, and military vessels that powered the nation through two World Wars. When the mill closed in 2012, it marked the end of the era, but the resilience of the community never faded.
The transformation of that historic site into Tradepoint Atlantic has turned a formal industrial powerhouse into one of the premier logistics manufacturing and technology hubs on the East Coast.
Now, that legacy of industrial strength enters its next chapter.
Anduril is bringing cutting edge defense production right here to our backyard, utilizing advanced artificial intelligence, robotics, and virtual reality technology to manufacture critical defense systems at record speed.
What makes this vision even stronger is their commitment to involve military veterans in the product design process.
By pairing veteran operational experience with expert engineers and raw materials, our community will once again be the absolute forefront of American innovation and national security.
This is a tremendous step forward for local job creation, economic growth, and the ongoing revitalization of District 6.
