The following article was submitted by Sixth District Delegate Bob Long about the possibility of redistricting and gerrymandering in Maryland
Just when you thought gerrymandering couldn’t get any worse in Maryland, Governor Wes Moore wants to take it to the next level. We just completed redistricting in 2022 and don’t need to update the maps until 2032, but the governor wants to create new maps to give all of Maryland’s Congressional seats to the Democrats.
There are currently seven Democratic seats (87.5 percent) and one Republican seat (12.5 percent) in the state, but Democrats outnumber Republicans 2 to 1; not 7 to 1. By those numbers, Maryland should have three Republicans seats (37.5 percent) and five Democratic seats (62.5 percent). Instead, Moore wants to redistrict again and make it an 8 to 0 Democratic district. Even Senate President Bill Ferguson doesn’t want to go forward with redistricting, but Wes Moore is determined on continuing this unfair redistricting.
This is all political BS. We all know this all to pick up another Democratic seat in Washington and to take out lone Republican Congressman Andy Harris. Moore has the nerve to say redistricting is to “ensure our Congressional maps are representative and fair.”
Another issue is that they want to do it during a Special Session in December. The budget is already tight, and we can wait until 2032 when it’s required to be done instead of wasting taxpayer money now.
It just seems like Governor Moore wants to redraw the maps just to eliminate all Republican members in Congress. No matter how you slice it, there are Republicans in Maryland and we deserve a bigger piece of the Congressional map.
