New Sparrows Point Middle & High School Buildings Recommended

Baltimore County Public Schools announced at its school board meeting that a recommendation was made to replace both Sparrows Point Middle and High schools with two brand new facilities. Both secondary schools currently share a building on 7400 North Point Road.

It was revealed at the May Board meeting the Karll Trust property was being presented as an option to be utilized as part of this project. The Karll Trust property is owned by Baltimore County government and is near the current Sparrows Point Middle/High School grounds.
To deal with overcrowding issues at both schools, a feasibility study was requested in April and four options were presented:

1. Renovate the existing building for the middle and the high school.
2. Build new replacement schools for the middle school and the high school.
3. Renovate the existing building for the middle and build a new replacement school for the high school
4. Renovate the existing building for the high school and build a new replacement middle school.

According to the report, building two new schools was the best option.

“The feasibility study concluded the construction of a new high school and a new middle school is the most advantageous approach for the following reasons: most complete and ideal learning environments, achieves all site programming and amenities goals; meets strict environmental parameters of the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area; most cost-effective initial construction cost; shortest duration (pending funding availability); and the lowest life cycle costs.”

The proposal is scheduled to receive a vote by the Board at its next meeting.
