It has only been five weeks into the inauguration flag football season and Eastern Baltimore County had a classic battle of two undefeated teams when Dundalk hosted Eastern Tech on Tuesday.
The Owls struck early with three first quarter touchdowns and survived a late Eastern Tech rally in a 19-12 victory.
The Mavericks almost pulled off the comeback when quarterback Mia Hinal connected with Madelynn Topper at the Owl goal line but a Dundalk’s London Hack made the flag pull in the closing minutes to seal the win.
Dundalk’s defense was led by Bryelle Sims seven flag pulled flags. Aayana Hammonds, Caleche Arrington and Kyrstin Mann grabbed four flags each.
The Owls had three explosive touchdowns in their first three drives. Deja Thomas broke off a 45-yard touchdown run and Bella Dawkins scored on a rushing touchdown of 75 yards.
Then Dundalk quarterback Carissma Williams got in on the fun with a 20-yard run and 40-yard touchdown run to put Dundalk up 19-0.
Tech settled down and won’t let Dundalk score for the final three quarters as Ashtyn Watts and Neve Connor led the Mavericks with four pulled flags apiece. Addison Amereihn also had three pulled flags.
Hinal completed a 30-yard pass to Topper to set up a Hinal rushing touchdown before halftime.
Hinal connected with Topper on a touchdown pass in the third quarter.
Topper had six receptions along with Kensi Easter for Eastern Tech.
Dundalk improves to 5-0 and Eastern Tech is now 4-1. Dundalk coach Luke Ethington is proud of the win.
“This was a ‘signature win’ for our program based on, not only based on the undefeated record of Eastern Tech, but the quality coaching demonstrated by [Tech] Coach Keith Wilson. He’s done a great job with his team,” Ethington said.
“The win validated the work put in from three months of preparation, four day a week practices, and two hour weight room and conditioning sessions. These girls have done every single thing that I have asked of them. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
