Gauri Muliyil is a state champion. The Eastern Tech tennis star won the 2A Girls Singles State Title with a win over Shivaani Selvan of Hammond High School.

According to Eastern Tech Tennis Coach Casey Brady, Muliyil is a junior but this is her first year playing for the school.

However; she has been playing tennis for many years as she competes across the country in different USTA sanction tournaments.

She is ranked 629th in the nation and 13th in the state of Maryland.

Muliyil was seeded eighth and beat the number one seeded Frances Ceballos from CM Wright in the State Quarterfinals and defeated Isabella Huntt from La Plata to get to the finals.

“Due to not playing for the school the last two years she was seeded 8th in the state tournament. This meant that she had to play the 1st seed in the quarterfinals and then 2nd seed in the finals,” explained Brady.

“We are immensely proud of Gauri and her accomplishments. She puts in the time and effort to achieve the success she has earned. Although this is her first year on the team, she has made a lasting impact.”

According to the MPSSAA website, Eastern Tech also had three teams win their respective regions and advanced to the state quarterfinals in Boys Doubles, Girls Doubles and Mixed Doubles.

The Girls Doubles team of Gabriela Martinez and Alyssa Thanner won their first round match over a team from Friendly High before losing in the 2A State Semifinals to Poolesville High.

The Boys Doubles team of Lawson Johnson and Anthony Oge lost in the Quarterfinals to Poolesville and the Mixed Doubles Maverick team of Lilly Leftwich and Bryan Nguyen lost in the Quarterfinals to the CM Wright team out of Harford County.
