Marks Wants County to Address Vacant Houses After Fire

Councilman David Marks reported the Monday night White Marsh fire on Carrington Drive was a vacant property. He released a statement calling for the County to address these vacant properties.

Last night, a long-derelict property on Carrington Drive went up in flames.

The vacant structure had been on Baltimore County’s demolition list for over a year, and was #3 in the process when it was engulfed in fire.

Both our office and the White Marsh-Cowenton Improvement Association had pushed for action since last July.

It takes simply too long to demolish these structures that are irresponsibility ignored by propertyowners or left to rot in established neighborhoods. I’ve called to Code Enforcement to have the site cleared as soon as possible.

The White Marsh Volunteer Fire Company provided me this assessment of how the undergrowth impacted their ability to contain the fire: “Long time vacant property was fully involved upon our arrival. Crews worked on scene for over three hours and were hampered by excessive overgrowth surrounding the property. Cause is under investigation by BCoPD Fire Investigators.”

We can do better.
