The dedication of Veterans Memorial Park and digital sign welcoming people to the community at the entrance to the Wells McComas Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 2678, located at 6521 North Point Road in Edgemere, will take place on Veterans Day, Tuesday Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.
The project was the idea of Veteran Keith Taylor; retired Sparrows Point Science Teacher and President of the Sparrows Point-North Point Historical Society.
He had a sketch drawn up and presented it to the Wells McComas VFW and the Auxiliary. Who voted to accept the project.
This $300,000 project was a joint effort with the State of Maryland, Baltimore County, Wells McComas VFW Post 2678 and the patrons who purchased bricks to honor a Loved One, living or deceased Veteran, Veteran’s dates of service, etc.
State Senator Johnny Ray Salling (R-6) a native of Dundalk and former Army Combat Engineer was able to secure the initial funding to start the project with a State Legislative Bond Initiative $100,000 which was matched by Baltimore County with a $100,000 grant.
Wells McComas VFW contributed $125,000 towards the project and additional funds were raised by
the selling of bricks.
Some Native-American artifacts were discovered during the excavation. Dr. Katherine
Sterner, Archaeology Professor from Towson University, believes that these artifacts go back to
approximately 5,000 years ago. Europeans began settling in Baltimore County in 1659.
After the dedication ceremony, light fare will be served in the Post Canteen.
