Sparrows Point softball wins another 2A North Region II title after defeating rival Eastern Tech 12-7.
The Pointers jumped out to a quick 6-0 start after two innings and leaned on starting pitcher Annelise Cardoso and their defense.
Cardoso pitched a complete game for the win with three strikeouts.
She got help from the leftside of the field as third baseman Alana Meurer caught a few fouls balls and shortstop Alexa Bienkowski turned Tech ground balls into outs.
Right fielder Heidi Kinsley doubled up a Eastern Tech runner after catching a fly ball.
Eastern Tech didn’t go away quietly. The Mavericks got the offense going with five runs in the top of the third.
Natalee Whitney hit a two-out basehit in the third inning that scored Nina Morales and Brianna Cody. Molly Weaver also had three hits for Eastern Tech in the afternoon.
They cut the deficit to 6-5, but couldn’t slow down the Pointer offense.
Allie Roberts led off the game for Sparrows Point with one of her four hits and scored all four times.
Cardoso helped her cause at the plate with two hits, including a blooper that scored two runs for the Pointers in the first inning.
Maddy Funkhauser also doubled in a run in the first.
In addition to her glove, Bienkowski scored two runs and hit a triple in the fifth inning.
Sparrows Point advances to the 2A State Quarterfinals.
