Preview of East County Council Races

Election Day is tomorrow.

Here is a preview of the county council races in eastern Baltimore County.

5th District
Republican David Marks is seeking a fourth term in the 5th District, which now includes portions of Middle River. He is being challenged by Middle River businessman Phil DePalo. Marks is heavily favored in this race.
On the Democratic side Crystal Francis is the heavy favorite over Nick Johnson.

6th District
This is Cathy Bevins old district and it now encompasses more of Towson instead of Middle River. The heart of the district is still Ovelea, Parkville, Rosedale and Loch Raven.
Mike Ertel and Shafiyq Hinton are the two main candidates on the Democratic side. Towson resident Ertel ran a good campaign but lost to Marks in 2010. Hinton is from Middle River and is endorsed by Baltimore County Exective John Olszewski. Some question if Olszewski should have gotten involved in this competitive race and could burn a bridge since Etrel is a popular community advocate in Towson.

Republican Tony Campbell is running unopposed and will face either Ertel and Hinton in November and he might be able to draw votes from the losing candidate.

7th District
Republican Councilman Todd Crandell is seeking a third-term and will face a heavy underdog in Donna Eve Sekora in the primary. The winner will face Justin Holliday who is unopposed in the Democratic field in the Dundalk, Essex and Edgemere area.
