The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is underway with the first Operation Clean Sweep Maryland of 2025. The effort will continue through Friday, March 29. Although litter pickup is a routine part of daily roadway maintenance, Operation Clean Sweep Maryland is an all-hands on deck litter pickup and debris removal effort held multiple times throughout the state prior to high-travel holidays.
The State Highway Administration conducts Operation Clean Sweep Maryland before the high-travel holidays, such as Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day and the holiday season.
The goal is to keep Maryland looking beautiful and encourage folks to partner with us by putting trash where it belongs – in a trash can. Remember, dumping trash and debris on roadsides is illegal.

The State Highway Administration urges motorists to keep a bag in their vehicle and dispose of it in a trash receptacle when you park. The public is our best eyes on the road, if you spot an area with litter, you can report it here. Get additional information about the anti-litter efforts here.
During this anti-litter effort, motorists are urged to slow down, pay attention and move over to protect crews working along highways.
