District 8 nominees Yahu Blackwell for State Senate and Glen Geelhaar for the House of Delegates announced a “commitment to workforce development and vocational education.”
The Republican duo said they want to encourage individuals through vocational training and called it “a commitment to ensure that every resident has the opportunity to achieve their dreams.”
They gave an example of Cierra Washington, a hair braider from Parkville. Washington wanted to expand her skill set by enrolling in nail and esthetics courses but needed funding.
According to Blackwell, he provided Washington the funding to attend school to enhance her skill and to pass the state board exam.
“[Her] journey is a powerful narrative of change, aptly illustrating how targeted support can trigger a ripple effect of positivity within communities. This is not just a singular story of one person’s success; it serves as a bold reminder that investing in individuals can lead to the revitalization of entire communities,” Blackwell said.
“When people are given the tools they need to succeed, they are more likely to uplift those around them, creating a culture of opportunity and empowerment.”
Blackwell added that he and Geelhaar are redefining the landscape of vocational training by actively engage with the community, promoting initiatives that prioritize accessibility and affordability in education.
Both men said trades education resonates deeply with the needs of the public, as they believe that a skilled workforce is essential for a thriving economy.
