-The following article was submitted by Sixth District Delegate Bob Long about the new Red Line project from Woodlawn to East Baltimore.-
The Red Line project is continuing as the Board of Public Works recently approved a $100 million-dollar, 8-year contract for its support.
Originally, there was talk of making the Red Line a bus route, but now the Governor wants to continue the idea of an unnecessary light rail.
The Red Line will start in Woodlawn and end at Bayview. As I have mentioned, I am against the Red Line going into Dundalk and Sparrows Point. There are no initial plans to expand into our district, but they could expand the route in the future. Taxpayers cannot afford this wasteful Red Line project.
The Moore Administration must prioritize its spending. In this economy, with inflation at a record high, we must watch every penny that we spend. We should have our focus on our bridge that needs to be rebuilt.
Our community is suffering the effects of the Key Bridge collapse through increased commute time and gas usage. This costly project will take away money from our rainy-day fund, possibly causing us a lower bond rating. This will cause us to pay more when borrowing money.
Of course, this financial burden is being brought back to taxpayers and the plan by the Democrats is to address this problem by increasing taxes and fees on services. We are starting to feel the attacks on our wallets. As of July 1st, there are over 250 fee
increases.
We need to stop spending money that we don’t have.
