-The following article was submitted by Sixth District Delegate Bob Long about the tax increases that took place from the 2024 Session-
Summer is usually a time to relax and enjoy the nicer weather with family and friends. It is also unfortunately a time where we experience the effects of the legislation that was passed in Annapolis.
We have nearly 250 fee increases from the BRFA, a bill that passed with the Budget. I proudly voted against this bill, but there weren’t enough people to vote against this expensive bill. As of July 1, MVA fees increased as well as vehicle transfer fees.
Many people experience raises in their property taxes bill because of increased assessments. Most homeowners don’t experience any benefits of an increased assessment unless they are selling their property. The County is the one that benefits by receiving the increased revenue. During my townhall earlier this year, I explained how to appeal the tax assessment.
In the future we can expect more increases in electricity rates for the State of Maryland to reach its goal of net zero emissions by 2045. The Office of People’s Council released a report last week detailing how gas and electric delivery costs have “skyrocketed” for most Maryland utility customers.
I will continue to advocate that we need to live within our means as a State. I will also continue to question and vote against unnecessary bills in Annapolis. Just as I suggest watching spending for an individual or family, our lawmakers must do the same. The State must not push its wasteful spending on its citizens.
